Are Murphy beds safe to use every day?
Yes. Our Murphy beds are engineered for daily use. The GENIUS line uses a gas lift mechanism that opens and closes smoothly with minimal effort, while the BASIC line uses a spring-assisted system. Both support up to 220 kg and are fitted with secure locking systems that keep the bed firmly in place when folded up.
What mattress do I need for a Murphy bed?
You need a mattress that is flexible enough to fold with the bed. We recommend a foam, memory foam or hybrid mattress. The GENIUS system accepts mattresses up to 24 cm thick, while the BASIC system accepts up to 21 cm. Standard UK mattress sizes (single, small double, double, king) are all supported.
How much wall space do I need for a Murphy bed?
This depends on the bed size. As a general guide: a single (90 cm) requires approximately 103 cm of wall width, a double (140 cm) requires approximately 160 cm, and a king (160 cm) requires approximately 180 cm. Ceiling height should be at least 230 cm for vertical models.
Can a Murphy bed be installed on a plasterboard wall?
Yes, Murphy beds can be installed on plasterboard (stud) walls, solid brick walls and concrete walls. However, when installing on a plasterboard wall it is essential to fix the bed to the wall studs (the structural timber frame behind the plasterboard) — not to the plasterboard panel itself. Fixing directly into plasterboard without hitting the studs will not provide sufficient load-bearing strength. If you are unsure about your wall construction or stud positions, contact our team before ordering and we will advise on the correct fixings and installation approach.
How long does delivery take?
Delivery typically takes 1 to 3 weeks from the date of order, as our Murphy beds are made to order. We deliver across the UK. If you have specific requirements regarding access, floor level or staircase width, please get in touch before ordering.
What is the difference between the GENIUS and BASIC Murphy bed?
GENIUS is our premium line featuring 25 mm reinforced boards, a gas lift mechanism, built-in LED lighting and the option to add a sofa, desk or wardrobe units. BASIC uses 18 mm boards and a spring mechanism, making it a practical and cost-effective option for guest rooms and rental properties. Both support up to 220 kg.
Can I add a sofa or desk to my Murphy bed?
Yes, but only with the GENIUS system. The GENIUS Murphy bed can be configured with an integrated sofa that remains usable when the bed is folded up, a fold-down desk panel, side wardrobe units and LED lighting. The BASIC system supports optional wardrobe units only.
Do Murphy beds come assembled?
Murphy beds are delivered flat-packed and require assembly and wall mounting. Professional installation is available — contact us to check availability in your area. A printed assembly instruction manual is included with every order. Additionally, after purchase every customer receives a step-by-step video assembly guide by email, making the installation process straightforward even for those assembling furniture for the first time.
