Why Mattress Choice Matters More for Murphy Beds
When investing in a Murphy bed, most people focus on the frame, the finish, and the fold — but the mattress is just as important. The wrong choice can affect how well the bed folds, how long it lasts, and most importantly, how well you sleep.
Unlike a standard divan or bed frame, a Murphy bed folds vertically or horizontally into a cabinet. This means your mattress needs to:
- Flex without damage – foam mattresses handle folding better than rigid spring systems
- Stay within the recommended thickness – most Murphy bed cabinets are designed for mattresses up to 20–25 cm; exceeding this can prevent the bed from closing properly
- Be light enough to lift and lower comfortably with the gas-lift mechanism
At Phantom Furniture, all our mattresses are selected to be compatible with our Murphy Bed collection.
Foam, Hybrid or Pocket Spring? Understanding the Options
Foam Mattresses — Best for Everyday Use
Foam mattresses are the most popular choice for Murphy beds. They're flexible, lightweight, and available in a range of firmness levels.
Our foam mattress range:
- Mattress Simple (10 cm) – the most compact option, ideal if cabinet depth is a priority. Made from HardCell/MidCell foam, available in H3 and H4 firmness.
- Mattress Classic (15 cm) – a step up in comfort, with 7 comfort zones and high-resilience polyurethane foam. Great for guest rooms or occasional use.
- Mattress Pure (18.5 cm) – our premium HR foam option with a Vital Jersey cover, dual-sided design, and anti-allergenic properties. Ideal for everyday sleeping.
- Mattress MIX II (19–20 cm) – dual-firmness design (H3 on one side, H4 on the other), so two people with different preferences can simply flip the mattress.
- Mattress Smart (19–20 cm) – similar dual-firmness construction with 7-zone support and a washable cover (60°C). A practical everyday choice.
Hybrid Mattresses — Best for Superior Comfort
Hybrid mattresses combine foam layers with pocket springs for a more traditional feel. They offer excellent pressure relief and airflow — but are slightly thicker and heavier.
- Mattress COMPLETE II (25 cm) – HR foam core with a 7 cm Visco memory foam layer and a bamboo cover. Luxurious comfort with thermoregulating properties.
- Mattress Eastman House Blue Sky (34 cm) – pocket springs with HR-Durafoam layers and a Cashmere cover. Premium hotel-quality feel.
- Mattress Eastman House Latex Comfort (34 cm) – 100% natural latex combined with pocket springs and Fast Visco Memory foam. The ultimate in natural, pressure-relieving comfort.
⚠️ Please note: The Eastman House range (34 cm) and COMPLETE II (25 cm) are thicker mattresses. Please check your Murphy bed cabinet specifications before ordering to ensure compatibility.
How to Choose the Right Firmness
Firmness is measured on a scale from H2 (soft) to H4 (firm). Here's a simple guide:
| Firmness | Best For | Body Weight |
|---|---|---|
| H2 – Soft | Lighter individuals, seniors, children | Under 55 kg |
| H3 – Medium | Most sleepers, side sleepers | 55–85 kg |
| H4 – Firm | Heavier individuals, back/stomach sleepers | 90–130 kg |
If you're unsure, H3 is the safest all-round choice for most adults.
Should You Add a Mattress Topper?
A mattress topper is a great way to fine-tune the feel of your mattress without replacing it entirely. It's also a cost-effective upgrade for an existing Murphy bed setup.
We offer four toppers:
- Topper Medium (5–6 cm) – breathable open-cell foam with massage-like surface cutouts. A gentle upgrade for those who want a slightly softer feel.
- Topper Hard (7–8 cm) – firm polyurethane foam with pressure-relief cutouts. Ideal if your current mattress feels too soft.
- Topper Black (6–7 cm) – PowerCell foam in H5 (very firm). For those who need maximum support.
- Topper Gello (6–7 cm) – gel foam with open-cell structure for superior temperature control. Perfect for those who sleep hot.
💡 Tip: If you're adding a topper to a Murphy bed mattress, factor in the combined thickness when checking cabinet compatibility.
